Following the Shepherd

Following the Shepherd - click to enlarge
by Peter Jeffery

“The Lord is my shepherd.” Psalm 23:1 Even if you did not have the privilege of growing up in a Christian home, these words were probably one of the first passages of Holy Scripture which fell upon your ears. No doubt many of us were able to quote these precious verses from memory as very young children. And by God’s grace not a few of us can truthfully say, “The Lord is my Shepherd” and “I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” Yet Jeffery observes that many true children of God do not daily enjoy the great truths which lie between the first and last verses of this Psalm. Following the Shepherd describes the wonderful blessings which should be your continual experience if you are truly in the fold of the Good Shepherd. As you read and consider the message of this warm devotional book, your heart will rejoice and your soul will yearn for those “green pastures” where you can “lie down” and feast upon the tender mercies of God. Jeffery has joined personal application and encouragement with a careful study and concise explanation of each phrase. Note his comments on the words “shadow of death”: A shadow is a shape cast by a real object but it is not real in and of itself. You can walk through the shadow of a tree but you cannot walk through a tree. Death is still there but there is no pain in it for the Christian. The terror and sting has been taken away and it is merely like walking through a shadow. Dear Christian, would you make these verses your daily experience and life-long testimony? We urge you, hear the Good Shepherd’s voice as you follow Him through the Twenty-third Psalm. Then go on to “walk worthy of the Lord fully pleasing Him,” as His goodness and mercy “like two sheep dogs at the heels of the flock” follow you all the days of your life and at last you dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
